OLY: Govt defends Olympic spending

SYDNEY, Jan 14 AAP - The NSW auditor-general today estimated the net cost to the state
government of hosting the 2000 Olympics at $2.3 billion, an increase of $700 million on
government figures.
In the performance audit report, the direct costs of the Games were estimated at $5.9
billion with direct revenues of $3.6 billion, leaving a net cost to the government of $2.3
billion.
The majority of the $700 million rise in estimated costs was because auditor-general Tony
Harris did not include the $602 million …
