QLD: Patel operation unnecessary: court

By Christine Flatley

BRISBANE, Feb 19 AAP - Jayant Patel fell short of competent medical practice when he
wrongly diagnosed and performed an unnecessary operation on a man who later died, a court
has been told.

Bundaberg Base Hospital patient Mervyn Morris, 76, died in June 2003 after Patel performed
two operations to try to stop bleeding in his bowel.

Colo-rectal expert Dr Brian Collopy told the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday
that the bleeding could have been treated with iron tablets, cortisone and occasional
blood transfusions.

He said Patel, 58, incorrectly diagnosed the source of the bleeding and unnecessarily
removed part of the colon.

This was an "inappropriate" and "over-aggressive" response, Dr Collopy said.

"Yes, there was an incorrect diagnosis of the cause of the bleeding leading to the
performance of an operation that was inappropriate," Dr Collopy told the court.

"Was his treatment in accordance with competent medical practice?" prosecutor David
Meredith asked.

"I do not believe so," Dr Collopy replied.

Patel has been charged with Mr Morris's manslaughter, as well as that of two other patients.

He faces another 10 charges relating to his time as director of surgery at the hospital
between 2003 and 2005.

The hearing continues.

ABI Research: Fiber Broadband Subscriptions to Double by the End of 2011
Type: News

The number of fixed broadband subscribers continues to grow in 2011.

According to ABI Research practice director Jason Blackwell, "There were more than 539 million fixed broadband subscribers globally at the end of second quarter. That is an 8 percent increase from the same quarter in 2010. Customer net addition is stronger in emerging markets."
The number of customers using high bandwidth services such as Internet video and online gaming is growing around the world. Exploding IP traffic generated by these services is putting service providers under pressure to handle the bandwidth demand. Broadband operators are expanding fiber broadband coverage which can best serve these bandwidth-hungry services. As an example, China Telecom is deploying fiber optic broadband aiming to serve 100 million households and 30 million fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) subscribers by the end of 2015.

At present, North America is the region with the highest fiber optic broadband penetration followed by Asia-Pacific. Extending fiber broadband coverage not only increases speed but also allows the roll out of services including video on demand (VOD) and IPTV. ABI Research estimates that worldwide fiber broadband subscriber numbers will more than double in 2016 to 142 million subscribers, from 69.6 million in 2011.

The Asia Pacific region is seeing strong subscriber growth, due in particular to the increasing number of subscribers in China. About 17 million Chinese subscribers have been added since the second quarter of 2010.

"The Asia-Pacific broadband market is sure to continue growing in the medium-term since low broadband penetration in countries such as China and India leaves plenty of room for broadband growth," comments research analyst Khin Sandi Lynn.

ABI Research's new "Broadband Subscribers Market Data" study, which is updated biannually, profiles subscriber trends categorized by operator, by country, and by technology. Detailed market trends and market forecast information for key regions and countries around the globe are provided where available.

ABI Research provides analysis and quantitative forecasting of trends in global connectivity and other technologies. From offices in North America, Europe and Asia, ABI Research advises thousands of decision makers through over 40 research and advisory services.

NT:Drink-spiking gang drugs 10 partygoers

DARWIN, Dec 13 AAP - Police are hunting a drink-spiking gang that allegedly drugged
10 partygoers at Darwin night spots over the weekend.

Darwin police said eight women in their 20s and two men had reported drink-spiking
incidents at popular Darwin bars and nightclubs on Friday and Saturday nights.

Police are combing security footage and believe more victims could come forward.

Authorities are unsure how many offenders are in the gang.

The victims suffered nausea, dizziness, loss of muscle control, respiratory problems
and memory loss, while five women required hospital treatment after vomiting.

Police say none of the victims was robbed or attacked.

One victim was offered a bottle of water which had been spiked, police say.

The victims had their drinks spiked at a hotel in Darwin's Smith Street Mall and two
venues on Mitchell Street.

Police warn partygoers to stay safe this festive season by watching their drinks carefully,
avoid sharing drinks and not accepting drinks from strangers.

SA:Rann steps up war on bikies

By Thomas Conlin

ADELAIDE, Aug 5 AAP - South Australian Premier Mike Rann has declared a war of attrition
against bikie "pond scum".

Recent shootings in Adelaide streets have prompted an angry response from the premier
who announced the anti-gang taskforce would get an extra 10 officers.

"Basically we know that they're pond scum who kill each other and unfortunately innocent
people get in the way," Mr Rann told reporters in Adelaide on Thursday.

"We're going to keep coming at them and we're not giving up."

The additional officers will increase the number of anti-gang taskforce officers to
54 with a further 17 specialist staff.

Earlier this week there was a drive-by shooting in the north eastern suburb of Andrews
Farm linked to an ongoing feud between the Hell's Angels and the New Boys street gang.

Despite that incident on Tuesday, Mr Rann believes the taskforce is winning the fight
against the state's gangs.

"They're under huge pressure, we've seen a whole range of bikie leaders move interstate
to set up shop there because we're making it harder for them here," he said.

He admits there is "no silver bullet" to fix the problem.

But he said "we've seen drug bust after drug bust, raid after raid and arrest after
arrest" in the "war of attrition" against bikie gangs.

Attempts by the gangs to fight anti-gang laws have also failed to deter the premier.

"They were successful on one per cent of our new laws and there's new laws coming in
the next few weeks as well."

SA: Winds ease on Eyre Peninsula, Ninga Ninga fires

Easing winds and reduced temperatures are helping fire crews gain the upper hand in
fires which have destroyed up to ten houses and an emergency centre .. and forced people
to flee the South Australian town of Port Lincoln.

The Country Fire Service says there's now a reduced threat in the Port Lincoln fire.

Fanned by strong winds and soaring temperatures .. it quickly destroyed more than 580
hectares of scrub and grassland.

The CFS says as many as ten homes were lost along with sheds and other buildings ..

and the local headquarters for the State Emergency Service.

Hundreds of people were reported to be fleeing Port Lincoln by car .. as thick smoke
blanketed much of the town.

Meanwhile .. another blaze .. at Ninga Ninga in the state's southeast .. continues
to burn out of control .. but it's expected fire crews and aerial water bombers will bring
it under control overnight.

The Bureau of Meteorology says cooler conditions will prevail across South Australia
tomorrow .. after the arrival of a southerly change with some rain.

Fed: Smith says 4th body removed from PNG plane crash

Fed: Smith says 4th body removed from PNG plane crash

CANBERRA, Aug 14 AAP - A fourth body has been removed from the plane that crashed near
Kokoda, Foreign Minister Stephen Smith says.

But, so far, none has been removed from the crash site where weather conditions remained
very difficult, he said.

"We now have to brace ourselves for what will be potentially a painstaking and long
process, much longer than we would want," Mr Smith told ABC Radio on Friday.

All 13 people on board the aircraft, nine of them Australians, were killed when the
aircraft crashed into a mountain about 1.5km north of the Papua New Guinean village of
Isurava at an altitude of 5,500 feet on Tuesday.

Rescue crews first arrived at the site on Wednesday but have since encountered great
difficulties in removing remains because of bad weather and rugged terrain.

In addition to the problems of extracting the remains, there was still the complex
and difficult processes of formal identification, Mr Smith said.

There were also three jurisdictions to consider - Australia, PNG and Japan.

"It always takes longer than one would wish or want," he said.

Mr Smith said he was aware of reports that other trekkers were stranded at Kokoda because
of the accident.

Those reports were not verified, although Airlines PNG, which operated the crash flight,
has temporarily suspended flights to Kokoda.

A RAAF Caribou aircraft would soon head from Port Moresby to Kokoda and officials aboard
would be able to make checks.

"Given the general circumstances we are of course doing everything we can to check
that very quickly," Mr Smith said.

Australian aviation agencies would assist the PNG inquiry into the crash.

"Let's have a look at the exhaustive investigation of the crash and then see what,
if any, changes need to be made as a consequence of that."

Fed: Home buyers crippled by stamp duty

EDS: Embargoed until 0001 AEDT Monday December 1

MELBOURNE, Dec 1 AAP - Growing stamp duty bills on residential properties are impeding
Australian home buyers' ability to enter the housing market, according to a new report.

The inaugural bankwest (bankwest) Residential Stamp Duty Report found stamp duty on
the typical home has soared 59 per cent over the past five years, almost double the rise
in household income over the same period.

Almost $53 billion in stamp duty receipts, both residential and commercial, has been
paid to state and territory governments over the past five years.

Annual stamp duty revenues have increased 77 per cent over that same period.

The research found struggling home buyers were forced to set aside at least 20 per
cent of their annual household income to pay stamp duty bills in four out of eight capital
cities in July 2008 - Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

This compared to only two cities - Sydney and Melbourne - in 2003.

Home owners in Sydney and Melbourne would need almost three months of their salaries
to pay stamp duty.

Brisbane has the lowest stamp duty bills, with home owners only having to work an average
of one month to pay stamp duty for median priced properties.

The rate of stamp duty charged on a property purchase increases as the property's value
passes through thresholds.

The data was sourced from state government revenue offices and the Australian Bureau
of Statistics.

Fed: Chinese treated no different on investment: Ferguson

CANBERRA, April 27 AAP - No Chinese companies have been told to withdraw investment
applications to buy into Australian resources companies, the federal government says.

Resources Minister Martin Ferguson today said that while a rigorous national interest
test would be applied to such applications, state-owned Chinese firms were not being treated
differently.

The Australian newspaper reported last week that the government was discreetly pressuring
the Chinese at high levels to back off and resubmit applications at a later date.

"There's been no suggestion that China or any other investor should back off," Mr Ferguson
told ABC TV.

"As China makes investments, some will be rejected, some will be changed to meet our
national interest test.

"That's no different to previous investments by companies out of key markets such as
Japan and Korea."

The minister said Australia is open to investment and China is entitled to do so in
the same way as companies from North America, Europe and elsewhere.

"But we will rigorously apply the national interest test to make sure that our resources
are developed and sold internationally according to normal market principles."

Asked if the government was considering changes to foreign investment rules given the
nature of China's state-owned investors, Mr Fergus said: "The world generally, not only
about potential Chinese investments but also sovereign wealth funds generally, is having
a close look at these issues".

A transport safety report has found an instructor pilot safely guided his light plane

The report says the Piper Warrior instructor and his student were circuit training

Despite almost losing the right wing and a stabiliser .. the instructor regained control

Fed: Habib sues government for damages

CANBERRA, April 24 AAP - Former Guantanamo Bay detainee Mamdouh Habib will start his
legal battle for damages against the federal government this week.

Mr Habib is claiming unlimited compensation for alleged assault and torture during
his detention in Egypt and Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

The High Court sitting in Sydney on Wednesday will hear submissions on a new venue for the case.

The case may be moved to either the NSW Supreme Court or the Federal Court.

Mr Habib's solicitor Peter Erman said no evidence would be presented this week but
a claim and statement of particulars was filed in the High Court last December.

"This is our first date before a court," Mr Erman told AAP.

It is uncertain whether Mr Habib will attend court in person.

Mr Habib was detained at Guantanamo Bay by the US military for more than three years
without any charges brought against him and without any trial.

He returned to Australia in January last year.

The Sydney father claims he was taken to Egypt and tortured between November 2001 and
February 2002 before being moved to the Guantanamo Bay.

About 500 people accused of links to Afghanistan's ousted Taliban regime or the al
Qaeda terror network are being held at Guantanamo Bay, including Australian David Hicks,
who was captured wit the Taliban in Afghanistan in late 2001.

The US government has been criticised for the treatment of its detainees, but has denied

NSW: Cooper bribed HIH executive in exchange for millions: court

A Sydney court's been told businessman BRAD COOPER bribed a senior HIH executive to
help him secure claims worth millions of dollars from the insurance company.

46-year-old COOPER has pleaded not guilty to 13 criminal charges at the start of his
New South Wales Supreme Court trial.

Six charges relate to about $124,000 he allegedly paid HIH agent BILL HOWARD between
December 2000 and March 2001.

Crown Prosecutor LIONEL ROBBERDS, QC, says in exchange, Mr HOWARD helped settle claims
COOPER made on behalf of his companies against HIH.

COOPER is accused of publishing seven false or misleading statements while negotiating
the settlements, which allegedly netted his companies millions of dollars.

At the time, he was chief executive of security company Home Security International
and its subsidiary, FAI Home Security.

HIH had a substantial shareholding in HSI.

Mr ROBBERDS says COOPER and Mr HOWARD struck their corrupt deal at an suburban Sydney
pub in December 2000.

HIH collapsed in March 2001 with debts of $5.3 billion.

Cooper's trial continues tomorrow.

NSW: NSW defends decision to shut elective surgery at Xmas

SYDNEY, Dec 20 AAP - NSW Health today defended its decision to stop elective surgery
over the Christmas period, saying it needed to prop up its strained emergency wards.

Director General Robyn Kruk said surgeons, support staff and patients generally preferred
to undergo elective surgery after the Christmas break.

She said the closure was about an increase in emergency admissions, rather than a lack of money.

"It's not a matter of just throwing money at surgery," Ms Kruk told a state budget

"If it was largely about money, it's an issue that would have been solved.

"We cannot ... affect our emergency demands."

Ms Kruk maintained NSW Health encouraged staff to take holidays over the Christmas
period so they would be rejuvenated in the New Year.

Wisconsin needed a late field goal to upset Michigan, which would have put the Illini in sole possession of the Big Ten lead, which translates into an automatic BCS bowl bid. Chances are that would have been to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

But in another of the twists of fate punctuating this strange college football season, it was the Wolverines who ended up booting the winning 3-pointer to stay locked in a first-place tie with Illinois.

"The only thing we have to worry about after winning our ninth game is a short week, getting ready to go for No. 10," said coach Ron Turner, briefly savoring the Illini's 34-22 victory here over Ohio State. "Everything else (especially the Big Ten race and the bowl quandary) will sort itself out."

If Michigan had fallen, ESPN would have found a national TV slot for the Thanksgiving Day game pitting the Illini against Northwestern at Memorial Stadium. Now it looks like that game will be on radio only (noon, WSCR 670-AM), with more than 30,000 tickets still unsold.

But with Illinois assured of at least sharing the Big Ten crown if it beats NU, a final sales pitch will start Monday. Tickets can be ordered on the phone, toll-free at (866) ILLINI-1 or via the Internet at fightingillini.fansonly.com.

Oh, brother: The whole family took a hit when starter Ohio State quarterback Steve Bellisari got suspended indefinitely after his arrest on drunken-driving charges early Friday morning. Steve's brother, Greg, a captain on the Buckeyes' 1996 Rose Bowl champs, had been tapped as honorary captain for Senior Day ceremonies.

Instead, neither Steve nor any family member was at Ohio Stadium for Saturday's tough loss to Illinois.

Steve Bellisari had been spotted with some teammates in a bar near the campus Friday night but was alone in his car when the police pulled him over.

The decision on whether Bellisari will be reinstated for next week's traditional season-ender at Michigan will be made in a few days.

"We'll have to sit down and ask, 'What do we need to do next?' " said OSU athletic director Andy Geiger.

Stat's that: Illini quarterback Kurt Kittner's 274 passing yards Saturday pushed him over the 8,000 career mark to 8,073. Much more important to the senior from Schaumburg is that this victory tied him with Jack Trudeau as the winningest quarterback in school history with 23 each.

"When Ohio State took Brandon Lloyd away today (with double coverage), Walter Young stepped up," Kittner said. "He caught passes over the middle, where they left gaps in coverage."

Illini Stadium? Illinois' run of success at Ohio Stadium stands at 6-2 since 1988. The Illini won four straight games here in alternating years from 1988 through 1994. Now coach Ron Turner has gone home victorious in his last two trips.

Coop scoop: Fired Ohio State coach John Cooper is not ready to retire at 63.

After taking a Pac-10 team (Arizona State) and a Big Ten team (Buckeyes) to Rose Bowl victories, Cooper's looking over his options and listening to coaching offers. One of them, a source close to Cooper said, might be Kansas, a perennial basketball power and football doormat in the Big 12.

"John figures that if Lou Holtz could bring South Carolina back, he might be able to do the same thing with a program like that," the source said.

Post-recession beauty industry trends: "frontier markets," value, new engagement and sustainability highlighted in brand communications key.(GO!)

Euromonitor International, in partnership with In-cosmetics 2011, presented its latest predictions for the beauty at the March event--outlining the four strategies companies are following to succeed post-recession and providing the outlook for the next five years.

"The beauty and personal care industry registered 5% growth globally in 2010, mainly due to the strong performance of mass market products," said Irina Barbalova, head of beauty and personal care, Euromonitor International.

And Euromonitor's latest research indicates that mass cosmetics will have an even stronger presence globally by 2015, as the dominance of Latin America in the global beauty landscape increases. The rising penetration of private label, with more than $2 billion of sales in skin care in 2010, will help drive this trend.

Barbalova and Oru Mohiuddin, senior personal care company analyst, Euromonitor International, explained the four key strategies employed by global brand owners in the post-recession world:

Strengthening Their Presence in Emerging Markets

Companies have strengthened their emerging market expansion strategies in "frontier markets" such as South Africa, Egypt or Indonesia. They are strengthening their offering to the local consumer by localizing their R&D to create products more suited to regional preferences.

Offering Value for Money in Western Markets

With 55% of total revenue, Western markets remain important. However a more value-conscious consumer has forced companies to add value to their mass ranges. Brand owners have included scientifically advanced technology to mass range products or acquired professional ranges to be distributed in the retail sector to make the most of that "value for money" feeling.

Engaging with Consumers in Western Markets Through New Media

Companies are exploring new opportunities to engage with consumers by increasing Internet and smart phone usage. Social networking, online retailing and consumer reviews are predicted to play an increasingly important role in shaping consumer trends in beauty.

Making Sustainability Part of Brand Communication

Intense competition and greater consumer awareness have put companies under pressure to increase their credentials as good corporate citizens. Brand owners are dedicating efforts to reduce waste, water consumption and gas emission--as well as improving sustainable sourcing, cooperating with ingredient suppliers and packagers to achieve better results.

Find your perfect pen pal!(Brief article)

Ever wish you had faraway friends? Girls who could let you know what's up in Wisconsin? A bud who knows the coolest trends in Tuscaloosa? Or maybe just someone you can tell your innermost secrets--without the chance of your entire school finding out? Pen pals are perfect for that! While you could just write to random addresses in Timbuktu, we have a foolproof system in place. The good news is, we have someone whose sole job is to find you five perfect pen pals (thanks, Peach!). The bad news is, it's gonna cost you $20 (that's four bucks a friend, folks). Hit up the 'rents for a Jackson, and follow the easy steps below. Then get ready to hear, "You've got mail!"

Here's What You Do

1 If you have Internet access, go to girlslife.com. Look at the links at the bottom of the home page, and click on Pen Pals. This will take you to our online application. Prefer to pay by check or money order? Download the mail-in application, fill it out and send it along with a $20 check or money order made out to Girls' life (see address in step No. 2). No cash, please!

2 If you don't have Internet access, take a self-addressed, stamped envelope (write your complete mailing address in the center of a long business-size envelope and put a stamp on it), then fold it, put it in another envelope and mail to: I Want a Pen Pal!, GI., 4529 Harford Road, Baltimore, MD 21214. We'll send you an application.

3 Fill out your application neatly with a dark ink pen. When providing your e-mail address, include the domain (like yahoo.com). For your own safety, we suggest that each pen pal provide an e-mail address or obtain a post office box instead of giving out a home address.

4 Once we receive your completed application and payment, we'll match you with five girls in the United States or Canada who share your interests. (We're good with this matchmaking stuff.)

5 The most important thing is to follow our rules on being a safe pen pal. And write back, for Pete's sake!

Esri and DOI Introduce Landsat Data for the World.

Free Online Services Make It Easy to Add Landsat Data to Any Project

REDLANDS, Calif., May 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Working in close collaboration with the US Department of the Interior (DOI), Esri is pleased to announce the release of Landsat image services. These provide access to almost four decades' worth of Global Land Survey (GLS) Landsat data developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and DOI's US Geological Survey. Esri provides access to the full multispectral, multitemporal Landsat data for free on ArcGIS Online as dynamic image services.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110425/LA88950LOGO)

"These Landsat image services expand the ability to monitor landscape change to Internet users worldwide," says Jack Dangermond, president of Esri. "We're excited to showcase this valuable government resource that uses ArcGIS to rapidly deliver Landsat data so that it can be used to help users understand changes in the world."

Esri has also published an interactive website that leverages these Landsat image services to provide a starting point for understanding earth changes over time.

"The Esri Landsat services suite will enable users to access satellite images of the earth and see through time what's happened to our globe," stated Deputy Secretary of the Interior David J. Hayes. "Whether you're a fourth grader or in the midst of writing your PhD thesis, having the ability to go back 30 years and visualize multitemporal earth imagery can be tremendously helpful in answering questions about how we should manage the planet and address real-world problems."

The Landsat image services from Esri leverage the 40-year, multibillion-dollar US government investment in the collection and archiving of continuous worldwide Landsat imagery for earth observation. At 30-meter spatial resolution, Landsat imagery is excellent for mapping regional trends in climate change, agriculture, wildlife habitat, forestry, regional planning, coastal zones, and national security. Each Landsat satellite image also "sees" more than humans by collecting data in nonvisible wavelengths such as the infrared and optical (natural color) portions of the electromagnetic spectrum.

"Earth-Shattering Study: Men Like Good-Looking Women"

--Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (via FOX News; http://is.gd/2zsZyf)

Because I am an information hunter/gatherer by the nature of my work, my radar screen is always dense with research studies delving into psychology, sociology, marketing, and what-have-you. Someone somewhere is always surveying consumers, studying computer and internet users, watching people (usually college student subjects) interact, trying to coerce white rats into doing something they otherwise would not, or just counting or measuring stuff.

Of course, then there are the academics who want to be published (and attract funding), the market researchers who want you to buy their expensive reports (preferably via ongoing subscriptions), the nonprofit research institutes that want to be taken seriously (and attract donors), and the political organizations that want to be noticed (and attract donors). This means they're all trying to attract media attention. So, if you consume a lot of media, ipso facto, you see a lot of research and survey results.

Lots of this stuff really is fascinating, but a fair amount of it is ... duh. You know you've seen this time and again: Some person, group, or organization spent time and/or money to "prove" what common sense would logically dictate.

For example, this was an actual research topic for some sociologists:

"Disney Elevates Heterosexuality to Powerful, Magical Heights"

--Gender & Society (via EurekAlert!; http://is.gd/3NuQGk)

You'll also find a lot of painfully obvious research results centered around technology and its users, such as the following:

"Apple Owners Nearly 40 Percent More Interested in the iPad Than Non-Apple Owners, According to NPD"

--The NPD Group, Inc. (http://is.gd/h3Y9Q0)

One study came to this conclusion:

"Taking pictures (done by 76% of cell owners) and text messaging (done by 72% of cell owners) are the two non-voice functions that are widely popular among all cell phone users."

--Pew Internet & American Life Project (http://is.gd/UgBTBi)

How could it be otherwise? Depending on the source you consult, about 25% to 40% of the wireless population have smartphones. This means that 60% to 75% have old-school cell phones with limited functionality. Most of these contain some sort of camera, and all of them can be used to send text messages. The conclusion is obvious.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Likewise, no one should be scratching his or her head over this tech nugget:

"There are a number of factors that can make a web page slow to load, both on the client side (the browser) and on the server side, but one really big factor is page size ..."

--Royal Pingdom (http://is.gd/SzN55x)

Of course, psychology and sociology research is rife with this sort of thing and, alas, ripe for ridicule in the media. Here are just a few of the low-hanging fruit:

"Bullies Pick on Unpopular Kids, Study Finds"

--Child Development (via LiveScience.com; http://is.gd/KeFiVw)

"When Young Men Are Scarce, They're More Likely to Play the Field Than to Propose"

--Journal of Social, Evolutionary and Cultural Psychology (via EurekAlert!; http://is.gd/9a0jNC)

"Compared with friendless children, those who had friends were less likely to report depressed feelings."

--Development and Psychopathology (via Concordia Centre for Research in Human Development; http://is.gd/sUn2Bs)

And here's something from our friends in the U.K.:

"Researchers found that youngsters in prams which face the pusher are more likely to talk, laugh and interact."

--National Literacy Trust (via BBC News; http://is.gd/vVddgn)

"Please have a look into a basic psychology textbook before you start such a study! Who funds these things?! Who reviews the proposals?!" remarked a commenter on The PhD Forums (www.phdcomics.com/ proceedings) discussion board, where this research news was referenced.

Meanwhile, from our neighbor to the north, we learn that even optimistic people get depressed when they lose their jobs:

"In the midst of an economic crisis that's sparked massive layoffs, new research by a U of T [University of Toronto] professor shows that even optimists get the blues when facing a pink slip."

--Social Indicator Research (via Newswise, Inc.; http://is.gd/w1iI1K)

Also, here's another gem from Canada:

"Popular media coverage of infectious diseases greatly influences how people perceive those diseases, making them seem more dangerous ."

--Public Library of Science: ONE (via McMaster University; http://is.gd/ieG0QH)

And there are health-related studies with results that seem less than groundbreaking:

"Caffeine Impacts Kids' Sleep"

--The Journal of Pediatrics (via My Health News Daily; http://is.gd/ZJxrKt)

"Kids Need Parents' Help in Managing Type 1 Diabetes"

--Society of Behavioral Medicine (via Bloomberg Businessweek; http://is.gd/doj7U7)

"Institute for Aging Research Study Links High-Heels to Heel and Ankle Pain"

--Arthritis Care & Research (via EurekAlert!; http://is.gd/MYgOkS)

"Coffee and Cigarette Consumption Are High Among AA Attendees"

--Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research (via EurekAlert!; http://is.gd/yry8ty)

"Increased journey distance to hospital appears to be associated with increased risk of mortality."

--Emergency Medicine Journal (via PubMed; http://is.gd/mqp2rW)

Finally, those of us who are employed in the business world, academe, and the like could have preemptively enlightened the researchers behind this study, saving them much time and labor:

"[H]aving too many meetings and spending too much time in meetings per day may have negative effects on the individual."

--Group Dynamics: Theory, Research and Practice (via The Guardian; http://is.gd/jhFb8C)

Marc Abrahams, the editor of the Annals of Improbable Research (http://improbable.com) and founder of the Ig Nobel Prizes (http://improbable.com/ig), told MSN that the reason there are so many "oh . duh" studies has to do with how we fund (or don't fund) scientific research:

"The whole system of getting grants has gotten strange and Byzantine, and sometimes you just have to do the obvious in order to get money to do research.... The big problem with science--especially in the United States--is it's much easier to get funding for something people already know. It's not risky."

Frost & Sullivan: Video CDN Market to Grow to $1.5 Billion by 2013, as Telcos Gain Stakes.

The increasing global penetration of high-speed broadband access has popularized the use of video content at higher bit rates and long form content. The demand for web-based video has also received a leg up from the ubiquity of the Internet across consumer electronics, including the PC, smart phones, gaming consoles and media players. This, in turn, has fueled interest among telcos and is expanding the market for content delivery networks (CDN) - despite the current economic slump (see also Frost & Sullivan).

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.ict.frost.com/) authored by Dan Rayburn and Vidya Nath, World Video Content Delivery Networks Market, finds that the market earned revenues of nearly $400 million in 2008 and estimates this to cross $1.5 billion in 2013.

If you are interested in viewing the Table of Contents, which provides manufacturers, end-users, and other industry participants with an overview of the global video CDN market, then please visit www.cdnreport.com for further details.

Over the last 24 months, CDN vendors have raised over $400 million in capital and have introduced multiple services. With increasing number of media and entertainment companies revamping their online video distribution model and committing high investment to it, there is potential opportunity for the CDN market.

Similarly, corporations, governments, schools and universities, healthcare providers, and retailers have also jumped onto the video bandwagon, using it for training, marketing, and advertising. This longer, more frequent consumption of higher quality video content on numerous devices is creating a pressing need for video content delivery services.

This exponential potential of the web video delivery opportunity has cast the net wide and increased the number of stakeholders.

"If on one side, regional CDN vendors in Asia and Europe are expanding beyond their native boundaries, then on the other, large telcos the world over are expected to launch CDN services in 2009 and 2010," say Frost & Sullivan Analysts Dan Rayburn and Vidya S Nath.

However the market is not without its share of challenges, believes Dan Rayburn, Principal Analyst, Digital Media, Frost & Sullivan, and also the Executive Vice President of StreamingMedia.com.

He says that while expanding their services and reach, CDN vendors should retain focus on easing customers' purchasing decisions regarding vendors, offerings, pricing issues, and quality of service (QoS).

"As CDNs try to stand apart from the crowd, vendors will look to offer additional pieces of the entire video ecosystem, including solutions such as content creation, capture, transcoding, management, and reporting," observes Rayburn. "This is a crucial step for CDNs since these services are going to be increasingly in demand as the market continues to grow."

Since video is a bandwidth-intensive application, it requires high efficiency and scalability. These issues compel existing CDNs to constantly enhance their capacity and delivery as well as tailor their pricing models to the needs of various customers.

"Further, simply having an expansive network will not ensure a successful implementation," notes Vidya S Nath. "Telcos that enter the market will have to hone connectivity across their networks and establish an ecosystem to support video distribution."

World Video Content Delivery Networks Market is part of the Digital Media Growth Partnership Service program, which also includes research in the following markets: world digital asset management market, world video encoders and transcoders market, world nonlinear editing market, world disk storage for digital media market among other hot topics. All research services included in the subscription provide detailed market forecasts, opportunity analysis and industry trends built on extensive briefings with market participants.

Reality Check: The World Turned Upside Down.

By Jim Barthold

Tradition has it that a British band played "The World Turned Upside Down" when General Cornwallis surrendered to the Americans at Yorktown. The implication is that the world, indeed, had gone awry when a band of ragtag colonials, albeit with the help of the French army, could defeat British regulars.

Cable people might want to hum a few bars as they read the following unsolicited testimonial from a Northern New Jersey Verizon FiOS subscriber:

"The interesting thing I wanted to note was they actually ran all new cable; they didn't use the existing coax. When I asked about it, they said, 'Your coax is kind of old - there are a lot of bridges and stuff like that, so we're just going to run new coax.' They really play up that their quality is better. It's the same compression algorithms. The only thing that's different is the transport medium. What they're saying is that if you upgraded your wiring in your house, you'd probably get better video quality. I think between the overall video quality and the quality of their MoCA network, I really haven't had any problems with the video. The Internet service is a little flaky ... when I send a lot of data, it gets clogged or something, (but) the video service has been flawless, and they keep on upgrading it in terms of the user interface and the usability of the service and stuff like that. It's much better than what I've seen being a Comcast user for many years."

As mentioned, this was an unsolicited testimonial. It was also evidence that what was being espoused a year ago at a NXTComm panel session in Chicago is coming true. During that session, Tushar Saxena, director of customer premises architecture at Verizon Communications, said, "The last hundred feet, your home network, is extremely important."

Saxena insisted that there had been a "change in the mindset at Verizon" and a desire to look into ways to efficiently handle high bandwidth - read that high definition - content on the home network as well as the outside plant. The network, he said, was a given, but "the home network looks like a bottleneck."

Breaking that bottleneck - or never letting it happen - seems to be accomplished. Vendors assure carriers now that their gear, whether running over powerlines, twisted-pair or coax, or even wirelessly, can deliver anything. Again, according to the unsolicited testimonial, this appears to be the case.

With the home network more or less under control, the telcos can now take the next step and add the mobile wireless network via a strategically located femtocell. If all goes well, that femto will sit right inside the same router that that's already delivering video, data and wireless throughout the residence.

It's been said that a man's home is his castle. Today that castle is an electronic mosh pit: computers and TV sets and cell phones and cordless phones and stereos and routers. There's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and coax and maybe even home networks like powerline or MoCA or HomePNA. The castle dweller wants to be able to talk on his phone, mobile or corded; watch TV in the den or living room or bedroom; and get a high-speed data connection either via a wire or portably anywhere in the residence. That's a complex wish list. It's probably the homeowner's responsibility, but how many homeowners can - or want to - make it all work?

Tracking back to the historical reference, it's also tradition that the British were not so much defeated by Washington's acumen or the fearsome French as they were victims of their own overconfidence; of having successfully done things their way for so long they had no room to consider other ways; and of badly underestimating the competition.

It seems now, listening to cable earnings announcements, that the industry no longer underestimates its competition. Whether it's willing - or able - to change to meet that competition is still to be seen.

De Beers Wins Battle for Its Name.(De Beers L.V.)(Brief article)

By Rob Bates

De Beers LV, the retail chain, can stop a New York diamond dealer from selling diamonds under the name 'De Beers' on the Internet, a judge ruled recently.

New York diamond dealer Marvin Rosenblatt incorporated the name 'DeBeers Diamond Syndicate' in 1981, and eventually let the trademark lapse. In the meantime, De Beers also registered the name, but only had use of it for the general category of 'luxury goods.' Rosenblatt soon snagged use of it for the more specific category of 'diamonds.' In 2002, court papers say, he applied for and obtained 35 Internet domain names, including variations of the name 'De Beers,' such as 'debeersdiamonds.biz' and 'debeersdiamondswholesale.biz.'

De Beers sued, and after company employees-including De Beers veterans S. Lynn Diamond and Joan Parker-testified to its long-standing use of the name, a judge ruled that Rosenblatt acted in 'bad faith,' saying the domain registration was an attempt 'to deceive the public and sow confusion.' The judge noted that, in his first trademark registration, 'Other than showing that Rosenblatt put the company name on the door of his family business, an action which apparently caused some amusement among the occupants of [his] building, the defendants have not shown through credible evidence that Syndicate engaged in commercial activity.'

Rosenblatt reportedly plans to appeal.

The court papers also included one interesting nugget about De Beers LV's performance so far: 'In the half year in which they were open in 2005, the two American stores had total sales of close to $5 million.'

"Increased customer demand for LSI Logic's Storage Components and Storage Systems product offerings provided the momentum for LSI Logic to report a solid second quarter," said Abhi Talwalkar, LSI Logic president and chief executive officer. "Storage Components, comprised of Storage ASICs, Storage Standard Products and RAID Storage Adapters, set the pace for the company with a record second quarter. Our Engenio storage systems subsidiary benefited from the successful introduction of its higher-end product line. Growth in Communications reflected stronger than anticipated demand from enterprise networking customers. In Consumer, we were pleased with the revenue strength in DoMiNo(R) -based DVD-recorder and cable set-top box markets, as well as digital audio products, which was balanced by the seasonal decline in game console revenues."

"LSI Logic generated significant sequential and year-over-year revenue growth," said Bryon Look, LSI Logic chief financial officer. "Our gross margins increased over the prior quarter. Profitability improved, both on a GAAP and excluding special items basis. We generated $60 million in cash from operations, reduced convertible debt by $150 million and ended the second quarter of 2005 with $782 million in cash and short-term investments."
